Many schools across the U.S. have been busy figuring out how to create makerspaces within their facilities, but what about having a school inside a makerspace? Learn 4 Life Concept Program and Vocademy – The Makerspace have come together for a first-of-its-kind partnership in Riverside, California. Together they will provide a means for students to attain their high school diploma while also learning real-world hands-on skills.
There are many types of charter schools, but Learn 4 Life started with a distinct goal:
The dropout problem is a serious one, with millions of students dropping out of school each year. Each high-school dropout creates a huge economic and social burden on our society. Years ago, our founders recognized the scope of that problem and decided to do something about it.
Our mission is a clear one: recover those students who have dropped out or who are in danger of dropping out. Get them into a resource center. Motivate them. Mentor them. Counsel them. And of course, teach them.
Vocademy is a one-of-a-kind, education-focused makerspace with the goal of being the future of hands-on learning. Not only the ideal partner to schools, but also a dream workshop which provides access to tools and the latest tech to everyone, in addition to teaching anyone the skills and techniques necessary to use the machines available in the facility. Whether one is a hobbyist, crafter, student, inventor, or engineer, people of all different ability levels and areas of interest can come together to share their knowledge and learn from one another. So while schools and universities begin to create small on-campus makerspaces that are only available to students, Vocademy and Learn 4 Life are the first in the world to provide a school within a makerspace. An important partnership which allows students to take real maker (shop) classes and become “more valuable to the world!”
Vocademy has created 3 different subject paths (with more in development) for students to choose from:
- Prototyping & Invention Basic Skills Path
- Metals, Welding, & Fabrication Basic Skills Path
- Costume & Prop-making Basic Skills Path
Each Basic Skill Path provides a hands-on learning experience, once a week for 12 weeks. On top of this class time, students are also provided access to the equipment they have been trained on for 10 hours per week to practice their new skills. With the mix of academic and hands-on, this equips each student with the fundamental skills sought by various STEM-related trades/industry, as well as the tools needed to build an impressive portfolio – all while working towards their high school diploma. This knowledge is ideal for any student – whether they plan on continuing to an institution of higher education or if they go immediately into the workforce after high school graduation.
The 60+ students at the Vocademy location of Learn 4 Life will begin their chosen Basics Skills Paths in September. For more information about this program, please contact Candace at Vocademy.
